AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio compression format standardized by the MPEG group in 1997, designed as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate, AAC delivers noticeably better audio quality thanks to improved psychoacoustic modelling, support for up to 48 audio channels, and sampling frequencies from 8 to 96 kHz. AAC is the default audio format on Apple devices, iOS, iTunes, and YouTube. Files typically use the .aac or .m4a extension. Developed jointly by AT&T Bell Labs, Fraunhofer IIS, Dolby, and Sony, AAC is natively supported on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and most modern media players.
