WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a proprietary audio codec family developed by Microsoft, first released in 1999 as a competitor to MP3. The WMA format comprises four variants: Standard (lossy, general purpose), Lossless (WMA Lossless, for archiving), Pro (high-resolution multichannel audio), and Voice (optimized for low-bitrate speech). At equivalent bitrates, WMA Standard offers quality comparable to MP3. WMA is natively supported by Windows Media Player and Xbox consoles, and plays on most modern media players including VLC and foobar2000. While its popularity has declined with the rise of AAC and streaming services, WMA files remain common in legacy Windows environments.
