M4A is an audio-only file container based on the MPEG-4 standard, introduced by Apple in 2004. The .m4a extension distinguishes audio-only files from .mp4 files that contain video. M4A files are most commonly encoded with the AAC codec, offering better audio quality than MP3 at the same file size. Lossless encoding using Apple Lossless (ALAC) is also possible within the M4A container. M4A is the default format for music purchased from the iTunes Store and Apple Music. It is natively supported on all Apple devices, and plays on Android, Windows, macOS, VLC, foobar2000, and Windows Media Player.

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio compression format standardized by the MPEG group in 1997, designed as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate, AAC delivers noticeably better audio quality thanks to improved psychoacoustic modelling, support for up to 48 audio channels, and sampling frequencies from 8 to 96 kHz. AAC is the default audio format on Apple devices, iOS, iTunes, and YouTube. Files typically use the .aac or .m4a extension. Developed jointly by AT&T Bell Labs, Fraunhofer IIS, Dolby, and Sony, AAC is natively supported on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and most modern media players.
