M4A is an audio-only file container based on the MPEG-4 standard, introduced by Apple in 2004. The .m4a extension distinguishes audio-only files from .mp4 files that contain video. M4A files are most commonly encoded with the AAC codec, offering better audio quality than MP3 at the same file size.
