M4A is an audio-only file container based on the MPEG-4 standard, introduced by Apple in 2004. The .m4a extension distinguishes audio-only files from .mp4 files that contain video. M4A files are most commonly encoded with the AAC codec, offering better audio quality than MP3 at the same file size. Lossless encoding using Apple Lossless (ALAC) is also possible within the M4A container. M4A is the default format for music purchased from the iTunes Store and Apple Music.
