AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio compression format standardized by the MPEG group in 1997, designed as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate, AAC delivers noticeably better audio quality thanks to improved psychoacoustic modelling, support for up to 48 audio channels, and sampling frequencies from 8 to 96 kHz.
