AC3 is the audio codec used in Dolby Digital, a surround sound standard developed by Dolby Laboratories and introduced in 1991. AC3 files typically carry up to 6 audio channels — front left/right, center, surround left/right, and a low-frequency effects (LFE) subwoofer channel — commonly known as 5.1 surround sound.
