WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a proprietary audio codec family developed by Microsoft, first released in 1999 as a competitor to MP3. The WMA format comprises four variants: Standard (lossy, general purpose), Lossless (WMA Lossless, for archiving), Pro (high-resolution multichannel audio), and Voice (optimized for low-bitrate speech). At equivalent bitrates, WMA Standard offers quality comparable to MP3.
